History

That of Loco Galbasa is the story of a dream born in the early twentieth century, from the desire of those who from afar hoped one day to return to live and work in their own land. Our company was born from the idea of Don Antonino Musso, founder of the family, who in 1922 returned from the United States to re-establish himself in Villafranca Sicula, a town in the Agrigento hinterland immersed in the riches of Sicilian nature.

With the savings from hard work abroad, Don Antonino intended to purchase that ancient farmhouse from 1860, now the headquarters of our company, which previously belonged to the noble Sicilian De Michele family. Due to various vicissitudes, however, his business plan had to wait until 1963, when his son Michele was able to take over ownership of the still unsold farmhouse. From that day on, his father's dream was made possible, giving life to an olive-growing company of considerable importance which boasts the production of one of the best organic oils in Sicily.

Today, a century after the beginning of that dream, Loco Galbasa is a consolidated reality that respects the best international quality standards. Currently the company is managed by his great-grandson Sandro Domenico Musso, who has taken up the baton of his predecessors with great passion. His tenacity and determination in innovating agricultural production systems has brought notable and constant improvements to an organic oil of excellent quality.

ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

Located 480 meters above sea level, Loco Galbasa looks south over the wonderful Mediterranean Sea and the beautiful island of Pantelleria, in a territorial context of rare scenic beauty.

Our estate extends for approximately 20 hectares in which it hosts centuries-old plants that constitute an olive-growing heritage of valuable native cultivars: among these the Biancolilla and the Nocellara del Belice, and to a lesser extent neglected varieties, which give the final product hints and flavors unique.

Every year we plan the harvest of the olives at the right time of veraison (the beginning of fruit ripening) and the milling within 6-12 hours of harvest: strong daytime and nighttime temperature variations contribute to this process to give life to an indisputable product quality.

Our olive production falls within the most traditional organic cultivation methods certified by ICEA, and is also included in the PGI Sicilia and PDO Val di Mazara specifications.

Respecting all organic farming standards, we carry out fertilization through green manure, a cultivation practice with certified field beans which allows natural substances such as nitrogen to be released into the soil without the use of chemical products and to nourish the plants in a balanced way. For traditional spraying of the olive grove we only use certified organic copper-based products.

To complete our work, the quality of the production is subjected to strict controls by organic certification bodies, both in the field and on the final product: ICEA certifies the quality of the olives, while Accredia provides multi-residue chemical analysis, thanks to intensive tests ( over 400 parameters) which certify the total absence of prohibited products.

In this way the final consumer will have the complete guarantee of an organic product monitored from the beginning to the completion of production, bringing to the table both the quality and safety of a top-quality oil.
